Probs bij McLaren ?

According to exclusive formula1.com sources, a relatively senior member of Ilmor Engineering, the company that is run by Mario Illien and is under contract with Mercedes Benz to manufacture McLaren's engine, was recently dismissed by the Northamptonshire based company.
"A senior engineer there (Ilmor) was recently let go because they found some problems with the engine in a number of areas ," said the exclusive formula1.com source.

Simon Armstrong, who as of 2000 held the title of Engineering Coordinator, was apparently asked to leave Ilmor only a few weeks ago as a result of some important deficiencies in the 2002 McLaren engine.

According to the source, there are some problems with the new McLaren engine that should have been evident in the engineering process. Moreover, the engine is short on power.

When formula1.com contacted Ilmor, a spokesperson simply said, "No comment." The company would also not confirm Armstrong's title.

Recent events would lend credibility to this report, as McLaren's team principal, Ron Dennis, was quite candid about the situation at the launch of its 2002 contender last Saturday.

"We are not where we want to be and Norbert Haug has been very open about that ," Dennis told Autosport at the MP4-17 launch in reference to the 2002 engine. "But there are another five weeks and there is a lot of work to do and a lot of parts coming. By Melbourne we should be more comfortable about where we are," he concluded.


In the week leading up the launch there had been speculation that Ilmor was running five days behind with the production of the power pack, and it was rumoured that Alex Wurz may have to drive on limited revs at the post presentation shake down.

On the day it was not clear if this was the case, and the Austrian set a best time of 1.21.110. This was 1.9 seconds slower than the best time set in subsequent tests this week.

For 2002, McLaren have chosen a completely new design for their power unit instead of relying on a development of the 2001 engine, which is believed to have been a development on the one used in 2000. There is also speculation that the new engine has a 90° v-angle as opposed to the 72° angle of the 2001 unit.

McLaren technical director Adrian Newey has been talking up his team’s chances of replacing Ferrari at the top of Formula 1’s pecking order.

Newey led the team which designed the dominant world championship-winning MP4/14 and MP4/15 cars of 1998 and 1999.

These cars had the edge over the Ferraris of the same period, but over the past two years the competitive advantage has swung the Italian team's way with title victories in 2000 and 2001.

But Newey believes that McLaren can recapture their competitive edge in 2002. Speaking in an interview with Autosport magazine Newey said: "I think in 2001, after upsetting the form card in '98 and '99 when most people expected a Ferrari whitewash, we got a bit stale.

"I view it as an appropriate opportunity to throw things up in the air a bit and... if we are extremely lucky and skilful, then we can wrest the 2002 championship."


However, Newey acknowledges that are areas in which the team needs to improve if it is to challenge Ferrari. McLaren’s engine partner Mercedes were badly left behind in the power stakes last season after being overtaken by Ferrari and BMW.

Newey believes that the ban on exotic engine alloys hit Mercedes harder than most. There needs to be a big leap forward from the German manufacturer if is to catch-up with its rivals.

He added: "What is frustrating is that the power we had in 2001 was no more than the power we had in '98. We obviously need to improve on that."

In 2001 zou men rondgereden hebben met een evolutie van de 2000 motor, nadat het gebruik van beryllium verboden werd. (schadelijke stof) De 2001 motor draaide dan reeds op de testbanken (geruchten 18.000+ rpm) .

beste heren McLarenfans, ik ben die berylliumuitvluchten zo beu als kouwe pap. McLaren was toch niet enkel op vlak van motoren de mindere van Ferrari, maar ook op alle andere gebieden. McLaren heeft vorig seizoen in zijn geheel slecht gepresteerd en daar was dat verbod op beryllium slechts een deel van. Zeggen dat McLaren de ferrari's zomaar achter zich zouden gehouden hebben, is dan ook zo flauw. Bij McLaren gaan ze toch nog eens moeten leren verliezen. Inspelen op nieuwe aspecten is trouwens iets wat elk bedrijf ter wereld op afgemeten wordt.

Onbetrouwbare wagen en een blunderend team. Meer moet dat niet zijn om nergens te geraken. Hopelijk wordt komend seizoen niet (opnieuw) een one-man show van Schumacher senior. Het zou anders best mooi kunnen worden : Raikkonen in een topwagen, een naar alle verwachting nog sterker bmw met montoya die zijn leerjaar achter de rug heeft en de intrede van Toyota (al valt daar waarschijnlijk nog niet veel van te verwachten).

Ik beweer zeker niet dat Mclaren iedereen op een hoopje zou gereden hebben. Ferrari was idd zeer sterk in 2001 en ik wil daar geen afbreuk aan doen
, maar wellicht zou er iets meer spanning geweest zijn indien Mclaren wel voldoende vermogen had gehad.
We zullen zien wat dit seizoen geeft
